A Blessing at the Bedside

An interfaith blessing that can be spoken or read aloud for a dying person of any or no tradition.

The blessing

May you be held in love as you rest.

May every breath be gentle, and every fear grow quiet.

May you know that you have mattered, and that you are not alone.

May peace surround you, and may those you love feel your presence always.

How to use it

  • Ask the family first whether a blessing would be welcome.
  • Adapt the words freely: add a name, a sacred name, or remove anything that does not fit.
  • It may be read by a family member, which can be more meaningful than a chaplain reading it.
